Chapter 412: The Warm House
Chapter 412: The Warm House
Instead of resting, Sulin and I spent the next few hours covering up the bodies with snow. It was her idea. Even though no one really cared about their bodies, her words were to at least make them seem presentable, and not miserable even in death.
I respected her for such words, given the fact that she always looked unreadable, blank; it was somewhat surprising to realize that she was someone who cared.
Afterwards, we continued through the expanse of the bridge, with a damn teenager, incessantly insisting he wanted to see my summon.
By late morning, we finally reached the end of the bridge, which was a colossal gate of ice that stood at the entrance of a city with pale, high walls. When I got to the gate, I finally, to a large extent, understood why White Feather referred to this as the Ice Roads.
What easily looked like the end of the bridge was actually not the end of the bridge but a juncture. And from this juncture, the frozen bridge extended towards the left and right, while seeming to sink into the ground ahead of us, entering a lake. Surprisingly, the lake was now frozen.
There was a reinforced, heavy metallic bridge, constructed over the bridge; it seemed so strong that even a whole carriage could ride over it. It was as wide also. Although not as wide as the bridge, but wide enough for five people to walk side by side.
After descending over the lake, we reached a barred gate. The iron bars of the gate had been frozen and were sharp with edges of ice all over, even the archway of the gate that depicted the city we were entering into was frozen, and I could barely see anything.
The men at the gate were covered in thick furs, and I could see glimpses of hard metal armor beneath those furs. With all they wore, they shuddered every few minutes.
"Identify yourselves."
The Hammerfeld brat stepped forward and raised a token towards them. Instantly, the guards stiffened up and bowed their heads.
"Young Master!"
He gestured towards both of us.
"These two are with me..."
They nodded and one of them went back and began to push open the gate.
’Ah... easy...’
It felt too easy, but alas, I accepted that it was what having a powerful family could do. I was saved from having to bring out the important identification tag that I had received from Lady Hue.
We plunged into the city, at least what looked to be the city. For one, this place looked quite scanty. It was another howling, raging snow storm inside. And the buildings were shrouded in heaps of snow.
All three of us, pushed through the wild, cold winds and then managed to make it into an Inn. The inside of the Inn, was light with a warm, amber light that flooded the entire space. Up, hanging down from the ceiling were chandeliers that encased flames.
Both warmth and light were brought seamlessly to the atmosphere, despite all the closed windows.
The Inn was crowded with people that sat at tables, enjoying their meals with murmurs of conversation.
The moment we entered, a thick voice called out to us amidst the busy atmosphere of the Inn.
"Oii, welcome to the Warm House, this is the best place to be with the morning’s unforgiving cold. Come, come over."
Behind the counter was a man that looked to be in his sixties, he wore layers of full body suit and had a warm hat that covered his ears, and also tied a thick scarf around his neck. While we were simply wrapped in the thick blankets Harter had given us the night before.
As we reached his front, he offered us a kind smile.
"How long would you be staying? And a single room, or three separate rooms?" He asked as he studied us three carefully.
"We’ll take two rooms!"
Before I could even say anything, the Hammerfeld boy jumped in.
The Waiter gave him a reluctant look and then slowly turned to me, seeking confirmation with his eyes.
I sighed.
"Give us two rooms."
The bastard was probably looking to be in one room with Sulin and send me off to the other room.
’At least, I’ll be alone and can finally be with White Feather...’
I was looking forward to it.
"There are different grades, would you like..."
"Please give us the most expensive, most luxurious room available."
The boy cut in yet again.
The man gave the same expression, then turned to me for confirmation.
"What are the available Classes of rooms?"
He smiled warmly.
"There’s the Common tier room, fifty copper marks per night. Then the Lord tier, that costs one hundred and fifty copper marks per night, then we have the Noble tier which costs five hundred copper marks. And the King tier, that goes for one hundred silver talents per night. I see no reason for you to go for the King tier though, but if that’s what you want, then there’s no problem."
’Ah... freaking expensive!’ I thought to myself as I considered the prices he gave in my mind.
The Inns in Athermere, even in Recimiras weren’t this high, of course, there was a high chance for you to get duped in Recimiras but hey, aside from that it was all a fun place.
’As long as you don’t have a crazy blood mage running after you at every point, determined to turn you to his zombie!’
That might have been self-inflicted but that was not the point here. This place had its own afflictions, and it was quite dire, hence the ruthlessness on the prices. How else would they make their profit, very few people had to be visiting a place like this.
"We will take the Lord tier."
Harter swung his gaze at me with a glare but I did not look at him at all. Instead, I brought out a pouch and counted delicately, then submitted three hundred copper marks.
’I should thank Lady Hue when we see.’
The man swept the coins off the table, bent slightly and retrieved a bunch of keys, looking at them all before pulling two out. He gave us a dashing smile and said:
"Follow me."
As we left, behind us, there were some particular groups of people with a strange and eerie smirk on their faces.
