Chapter 91 Thieves Appear
Chapter 91 Thieves Appear
On the first day of the ride, Shi An did not feel too tired.
Aside from eating and using the restroom, the two were almost always on horseback.
When it got dark, I found a flat spot to pitch a tent, which felt very liberating.
It was Shi An's first time spending the night in the wild, and she was curious about everything.
"My lady, what is this pit for?"
Chu Ci glanced at it and said, "It must be a hole dug by a rabbit."
"Oh, my lady, you know so much." Shi An looked at Chu Ci with admiration.
But Chu Ci didn't receive it; she was busy pulling the person aside, saying, "Be careful."
Shi An followed his wife's lead and walked to the side, somewhat puzzled, "What's wrong, my wife?"
Chu Ci pointed to a pile of unidentified animal droppings in the distance, "You almost stepped in poop."
"!!!" Shi An was startled when she saw it.
He was wearing his favorite embroidered shoes today, and he would be very upset if they were ruined.
Chu Ci reminded him, "Take a closer look at the land in the wild."
Shi An nodded, knowing he had been a bit rash, but still couldn't help asking, "My lady, why are there so many rabbit holes here?"
Chu Ci patiently explained, "Because the environment here is suitable for rabbits to live in, they dig burrows and make nests here."
Shi An nodded as if she understood, then asked curiously, "Will we encounter rabbits tonight?"
Chu Ci smiled and said, "That's possible, but don't worry, rabbits generally don't attack people on their own."
Hearing this, Shi An felt a little relieved, but she still couldn't help looking around, as if trying to find any trace of rabbits.
After a while, he suddenly pointed to a tree not far away and excitedly shouted, "My lady, there looks like a rabbit over there!"
Chu Ci looked in the direction he was pointing and sure enough saw a gray hare squatting under a tree eating grass.
Upon seeing this, Shi An couldn't wait to grab it, but Chu Ci pulled him back.
"Don't be impulsive. There are many dangers in the wild. You'd better not stray more than a meter from me," Chu Ci said earnestly.
Upon hearing this, Shi An quickly grabbed Chu Ci's hand, "Okay, I'll stick to you forever."
Chu Ci smiled after hearing this, then pulled the person into his arms and kissed him.
As night fell, the two sat around the campfire, eating dry rations and enjoying the peaceful night.
Shi An looked up at the starry sky and exclaimed, "My lady, the stars here are so bright! They're even brighter than the ones we see at home."
Chu Ci also looked up and saw countless stars in the night sky, like dazzling gems inlaid on the black sky.
The two sat quietly, appreciating the beauty of nature, until late at night before finally going into their tent to rest.
Because she was used to sleeping on a soft bed at home, Shi An didn't sleep very well that night.
As I tossed and turned, many images flashed through my mind.
There are scenes of him living alone after his parents' death, scenes of the Crown Princess suddenly appearing to kill him, and scenes of him being chased on the road... These scenes are intertwined, making Shi An's feelings very complicated.
When he woke up in the morning, he felt very tired, as if he had just gone through a major battle.
The vulnerable man immediately called out to Chu Ci, "My lady..."
Chu Ci took out a water bag and handed it to Shi An, "Have some water."
"Mmm." Shi An took the water bag, tilted his head back and drank a few mouthfuls to moisten his dry throat.
Then he slowly walked out of the tent and found that the sun was shining brightly outside, but the air was a bit cold.
Many birds perched on the surrounding trees, chirping and chattering with clear, melodious voices. The campfire in front of the tent had gone out, leaving only a pile of ashes.
Chu Ci sat beside her, eating a pancake; this was already her second pancake.
Shi An didn't sleep well and had a poor appetite; she only ate two bites before giving up.
Chu Ci did not force him, but silently packed up the tent and led the people to continue their journey.
Throughout the journey, Shi An remained silent, half-asleep and half-awake in Chu Ci's arms.
Around noon, Shi An's stomach started growling.
He glanced at Chu Ci sheepishly, who seemed to understand and lowered his head to ask, "Should we stop?"
Shi An nodded and said softly, "I want to eat."
Chu Ci reined in his horse, found a shady spot to stop, then took out some flatbread from his bag, tore it into pieces, and handed them to Shi An.
The pancakes were a bit dry and hard; An had to drink several mouthfuls of water after each few bites to swallow them.
Chu Ci smiled as she watched him chew with great effort, then picked up a handkerchief to wipe the corners of his mouth.
"Just two more days, and we'll be in town soon," Chu Ci comforted her. "Then we can get some rest and have a hot meal."
"Okay," Shi An replied.
He didn't feel that his life was bitter; it seemed that as long as Chu Ci was by his side, he would be happy.
The following evening, Chu Ci and Shi An finally arrived at a small town.
This small town is only one guesthouse.
Chu Ci requested a superior room and asked the waiter to bring two basins of hot water so they could wipe their bodies.
As Shi An wiped herself clean, she felt exhausted. Seeing this, Chu Ci took the towel, gently pulled Shi An into her arms, and whispered, "Leave the rest to me."
Shi An replied softly, "Then I'll have to trouble you, my lady."
Chu Ci smiled and replied, "No trouble at all."
Then, she gently kissed Shi An's forehead and said, "Rest well if you're tired."
Shi An nodded slightly, closed her eyes, and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
After carefully wiping Shi An's body, Chu Ci began to wipe herself.
It was already very late when I finished wiping it.
She turned off the light and drifted off to sleep with her husband.
However, in the middle of the night, Chu Ci was suddenly awakened by a slight noise.
She opened her eyes alertly, nimbly got out of bed, and silently approached the window like a nimble cat.
The sound of two people breathing could be heard outside the window; clearly, someone was trying to pry it open.
Chu Ci showed no mercy, quickly opened the window, and then threw a punch at each of them.
The two lay down on the ground and slept soundly like children, as if they had forgotten all their troubles.
Chu Ci looked at them and frowned.
If I weren't so exhausted, I would definitely have sent those two to prison and made them pay for their actions.
However, she ultimately chose to close the window and return to her room to continue resting.
The next morning, when Chu Ci opened the window again, he found that there was no one outside.
The two thieves had obviously already run away.
Shi An knew nothing about what happened last night. After washing up as usual, he followed Chu Ci downstairs to the restaurant.
The town has few residents, and it is especially quiet in the early morning.
Chu Ci ordered two bowls of steaming porridge and two baskets of fragrant steamed buns for breakfast.
