Chapter 438 The Terrifying Outsiders
Wen Luozhi, who lived in the desolate town, hadn't seen the two of them for a long time and thought they had gone back to the capital.
Little did they know that both of them had gone to the north, and another was on her way to find her.
She sat quietly in the courtyard, watching Fang Da and the others tinker with the food, her mind racing with thoughts of what to do with the peppercorns since she would be leaving in less than a month.
The plants in the broken ground that she had secretly sprayed with pesticides were almost ripe, and harvesting them would be a matter of the next couple of days.
But what about the others? How do you harvest the crops grown on rented land and those that are farmed by themselves?
The road back is so far, how much silver would it cost to transport this out?
As she thought about it, she felt like crying but had no tears left. The system task was completed, but what about the next step?
Fang Da noticed her sitting there with her eyes vacant, so he put down the rolling pin and walked over.
"Master? What are you thinking about?" He waved his hand in front of Wen Luozhi's eyes.
Wen Luozhi snapped out of her daze and said abruptly, "Fang Da, we should be heading back soon."
Fang Da was taken aback, and Fang Er, who was only a few steps away, also paused in his movements.
Wei Yi, puzzled, tilted his head and asked, "I know people from other places are going back, but where are you going? Aren't you and Fang Da from around here?"
Fang Er looked up at him, who had a curious expression on his face, and didn't know what to say.
To be honest, he seems to be having a little bit of a reluctance to go back now.
Fang Da was similar to him; this time, when talking about going back, he didn't feel as happy as he had been.
Wen Luozhi narrowed her eyes. These two grown men never reacted like this before when the topic of going back came up. What's wrong with them today?
Could it be...
"You little rascal, are you reluctant to go back?" she blurted out.
Fang Da chuckled, turned to look at Fang Er and Wei Yi, and whispered, "Fang Er and I wanted to go back before because life here was unbearably miserable!"
"Life is getting better every day. We're earning more money, and we've gained a good brother in Wei Yi."
Wen Luozhi smiled and raised her hand to interrupt him; she could roughly guess what Fang Da was going to say next.
Seeing Fang Er working hard across from her, she asked, "What about Fang Er? Does he think the same way as you?"
Fang Da scratched his head. Fang Er hadn't been saying anything about going back to Fang Da lately. Was it because he was the same way?
Wen Luozhi stood up, patted him on the shoulder, and said, "You two really need to think this through."
"Let me know when you've thought it through. I also need your help with something."
"Sir, just say what you need. I, Fang Da, am ready to go through fire and water for you!" Fang Da patted his chest and shouted with boundless pride.
"Me too"
"Me too"
Fang Er and Wei Yi had no idea what the two of them were talking about before they shouted in unison.
Wen Luozhi smiled mysteriously, "Then it's settled for now. Just don't go back on your word later."
She just realized that she could train two groups of people to travel back and forth, or even more groups, after she got back.
There are several towns along the way, which means there are several nodes. Each batch can simply be relayed like a relay station.
If Fang Da and the others stay here, there will be people to take over the work, and she can trust them with the harvest.
If all else fails, she can call the town mayor; as long as the money is there, nothing is impossible.
It seemed like things had suddenly taken a turn for the better, and Wen Luozhi's mood improved. Today, she decided to go with them to the large stalls to take a look.
Fang Da and his team couldn't be happier. As long as Wen Luozhi went there, she would discover the problems, point them out, and then they would make changes and their business would improve.
Unfortunately, she was too busy, and they were too embarrassed to trouble her to go and see her.
Wen Luozhi didn't know if it was just her imagination, but when she walked down the street with the others, it always felt like there were more people.
Thinking about it, today isn't a market day, so why are there more people than on market days?
"Fang Da, don't you think there are more people?" she said as she looked around and found that there were quite a few people squatting on the side of the street, doing nothing but begging.
Wei Yi knew immediately that she was out of touch, so he caught up with her and lowered his voice, "Master, how come you don't know that you're always out running around?"
Wen Luozhi looked at him in confusion, and Wei Yi continued, "People from the town closest to our Desolate Town are all heading this way."
He noticed some people on the street staring intently at their few carts, and his hands involuntarily tightened.
The nearest town?
Wen Luozhi thought about it and realized that the town in front of the desolate town when she came here was the same town where she met that beautiful girl.
Her carriage ran day and night for almost two days.
Isn't that place incredibly poor? How did these people get here? By walking?
As she was thinking, she heard Fang Da sigh softly and say, "It's a good thing it's spring. If we had walked like Fang Er and I did back then, we probably would have starved to death on the way."
So you really did come all this way?!
Wen Luozhi couldn't help but look at those people on the street who were not much better than beggars, and she couldn't help but admire them.
When the group arrived at their regular stall, there were already returning customers waiting for them.
Having not been here for a long time, Wen Luozhi thought they would divide the work and sell the goods as before. Unexpectedly, as soon as they arrived, Fang Da took two sticks and walked away, looking very fierce.
Wen Luozhi: ? ? ?
With a puzzled look on her face, she helped Fang Er and Wei Yi set out their things and asked curiously, "What's your eldest brother doing with those two sticks? Is he going to hit someone?"
She said it casually, but to her surprise, the two nodded seriously.
"Didn't they say there were more people in town these past few days? These people are even worse than we were before; they just grab whatever they can get their hands on."
"We had some things stolen yesterday, so we discussed it and decided that Fangda would go and guard them today."
Fang Er felt a chill run down his spine when he recalled the scene of those people from other towns looting things yesterday. Their appearance was truly terrifying, even more so than when he and Fang Da were eating when they were starving.
Wen Luozhi nodded knowingly. With so many people, the mayor should be able to find a solution, right?
These are only the ones that just arrived recently; there will definitely be more later.
She wondered if the town mayor could handle it. She felt sorry for the old man, thinking he had it so tough.
When the town was poor, he paid out of his own pocket; now that things are better, people from other towns have moved here in droves.
She didn't understand how the local officials acted. Could those people be like the local tyrants in the Black Mountain Mine?
Yesterday, the three brothers made some threats, thinking that no one would come to steal their things today.
Everything was normal at first, until a customer dropped a dumpling on the ground while eating, and those hungry wolves immediately pounced on it to snatch it.
A dumpling was snatched to pieces, and those people, having tasted the sweetness of it, no longer cared about anything else; being beaten was better than going hungry while fighting for it.
"Eat, I want to eat, I want to eat!"
"They have food!"
"Give us something to eat!"
Several people started moving at the same time, and a group of people rushed towards their stall. Fang Da couldn't stop them at all and was pushed to the ground by them.
After being stepped on several times, he quickly curled up into a ball and hugged his head.
Wen Luozhi had already pushed Fang Er and Wei Yi away. When she turned around and didn't see Fang Da, she looked closely and found him on the ground.
"Fang Da, give me your hand!" She rushed over and used all her strength to push away the people behind her, grabbing Fang Da's hand and pulling him out.
As if he had survived a disaster, Fang Da stood up and rubbed his thigh, which was still sore from being stepped on.
"How...how scary!"
Wei Yi was stunned by what he saw.
