Chapter 188: Descent 3
Chapter 188: Descent 3
"Seven hells." I cursed, looking at the towering tsunamis that rose like tornadoes. I hated to admit it, but just like in the novel, offshore city was pretty done for.
The moment the tsunamis crashed against the city, they swept everything in their way, and left nothing in their wake, be it the crumbling buildings, or even the people, including a few of my reflections.
In less than five seconds, more than half the city was already gone. Meanwhile, Aric and I continued to run, with the towering waves right behind us. Our bodies burst forward like bullets released from a gun, so much that we became two streaks of black racing through the collapsing city.
For a wave of water, it sure moved with incredible speed, so much that Aric and I were barely ahead of it.
"Where the hell are the others?!" Aric shouted, his voice barely coming over due to the speed at which we were moving.
"Relax, they’ll..." I also began shouting, but was cut off by Aric’s incessant exclaims.
"Relax?! Do you hear yourself?! We’re one step away from death. I don’t know about you but I’m not very fond of dying a virgin."
I felt my eye twitching despite myself. What does being a virgin have to do with our current situation.
"What I meant was that the others are on their way, and they’re bringing help!" I shouted over the cover of the roaring waves behind us.
As if on cue, a massive airship suddenly swooped down from above and flew over us. The airship then maintained its current speed and stayed consistently in our front. But the ship had to stay a lot higher to avoid crashing into some of the still standing buildings.
Anastasia and Alistair then appeared from at the back of the airship. Aric and I exchanged a glance and understood in a moment what we were to do.
"Now!" I shouted.
As the water raged behind us, and the blackened sky churned with lightning, Aric and I kicked against the ground and jumped high into the air and towards the airship, but unfortunately, we couldn’t reach into the deck due to how high the airship was.
Bang!
We both crashed heavily against the frame of the airship so hard it knocked the breath out of our lungs. We were only hanging on the airship by one arm each, but at least we were no longer running for our lives.
"Hahahahahahaha!" Aric and I exchanged a glance and burst out laughing, before we were pulled up by Alistair and Anastasia respectively.
You see, due to the fact that things did not go according to what I envisioned during the darkwalker’s descent, I relied on Murphy’s law this time around. If there was a chance something would go wrong, then it would go wrong.
I had my reflections in the city who secured another airship the moment the chase in the water began, then guided the rest of the students into it and a few lucky civilians. Sia and the rest who were with us were also picked up by the airship, and now so were we.
In the end, it all turned out well.
"What’s so funny about this situation?" Sia asked puzzled, as we walked towards the cockpit.
I shook my head.
"And I thought you understood the thrill of walking the line between life and death." I said. "Anyway, what’s the ETA?" I asked.
"ETA?" Sia tilted her head as we entered the cockpit.
In the cockpit, Rose was at the helm, expertly piloting the airship, the rest like Levi and Calum stood tense next to her.
"Estimated time of arrival." I turned to her and replied.
"Around 1 to 2 minutes give or take." Sia replied.
You see, the airship wasn’t the only thing I had planned. Since in the novel, a duke was sent by the Necron empire, and we just so happen to have their princess right here with us, why not use the power of connections.
I had Sia contact Sevas, telling him about the situation here using one of my reflections a little over five minutes ago, so as Sia said, the person sent should be here in a minute or two.
Fascinating, isn’t it? Sometimes even I am marvelled by my genius.
"Wait, a minute?!" Calum suddenly exclaimed. "We’re safe." his eyes widened in realization.
The others also had their tense bodies relax slightly after hearing that information.
But unlike them, I wasn’t that pleased. ’Did this motherfucker just drop a red flag?’ I thought, but before I could finish my thought process, my body suddenly involuntarily shifted to the side.
I wasn’t the only one, everyone in the cockpit, excluding Rose, all shifted to the side. I was about to curse at Rose for her reckless driving/piloting when I saw a dark annihilating beam graze past the side of the airship.
’What the...’ Once again, my thoughts were cut off as I crashed with Anastasia, and we both fell towards the side of of the cockpit along with the others.
Bang!
"Get off me." Sia pushed me off her body. As much as I would like to tease her, this wasn’t the time for it. I stood up and dragged her up with me.
"What was that?" Alistair asked Rose after he stood up.
"It’s right behind us." Rose replied.
"What?!" I put my head outside the window and there I saw a massive black grinning grotesque face flying after after our ship.
"What the fuck?" The bastard was already at the Delta rank. I came to that conclusion from one simple fact, the creature could now fly, and only beings that had reached the realms of the Delta rank could fly.
"I’ll be damned." I cursed and hurriedly took my head back in as another dark beam shot towards me, luckily, Rose tilted the ship to the side once more, making the effects of gravity drag me from the beam’s trajectory.
Fortunately or unfortunately, I once again stumbled into Sia and sent the two of us crashing towards the other side of the cockpit.
Worse, I had seen it clearly, before I fell back into the ship. One of the bat- like wings on that side had been chipped by that black beam.
The airship suddenly took a downward curve.
"Fuck!" I cursed as we were all sent tumbling towards Rose who was at the helm. I wrapped my arms around Sia so we could roll for a softer impact.
We rolled towards Rose’s legs, who promptly leaped up using the wheel and the effect of gravity as a pivot. My back crashed hard against the wheel stand, knocking the air out of my lungs. But if there was any consolation, at least I had a girl in my arms.
Damn, what was wrong with me, thinking something like this in our situation? But I had to admit, she smelt good.
"One of the wings is damaged, we’ll need significantly more firepower if we want to escape with only one functional wing." Rose who was hanging above us said as she somehow managed to stabilize the airship a few meters from the ground.
I had an idea for this, but first, it was my turn to retaliate. "Get off me." I pushed Sia off myself, and flipped back on my feet. By this time we had already left the areas of offshore city, or rather, the now drowned city.
I drew out the cylindrical casing holding the aether stones that powered the airship, and found out that out of the few dozen aether stones powering this airship, only three still had their light.
I swept everything out of the cylinder, stocked it full with brand new aether stones from my spatial storage, and pushed it back all in quick succession.
"Step on it!" I exclaimed as another dark beam tore through the roof of the airship and exited from our front.
I almost got flung backwards as the airship shot through the air at absurd speeds, but a firm hand on my shoulder stopped me in my place.
I looked back, and my face broke into a sheepish grin.
"You’ve done enough, haven’t you?" she said flatly. Now this was just her accusing me. I definitely was not crashing on her on purpose.... maybe.
However, the grin on my face soon froze as the massive grinning face of the disgustingly ugly creature suddenly appeared close to the window.
’Delta+ rank?’
The creature suddenly raised one of it’s massive bladed mandibles and pierced towards me through the ship.
Chuck!
The blade pierced through me cleanly and pushed me to the other side of the room.
Uhk!
I coughed out a mouthful of blood as it withdrew the blade from my person and from inside the airship.
Sia and Aric rushed towards me, but their efforts were for naught as the creature suddenly raised one of it’s hands and swung it at the side of the ship.
BANG!
The last thing I remembered was falling into the sea.
